Update for Day 2 of RORC's Caribbean 600 Race.

By Buttons Padin

The RORC’s Caribbean 600 is now into its second day with many of the boats still facing over 400 miles to the finish. At the time of this writing – 1220 ET (UTC+5), Local sailor Peter McWhinney (Larchmont, NY) has his JPK 1140 approaching St. Martin at 8.9 knots giving his the lead in IRC 2 with 410 miles still to go. At the front of the fleet, however, is the other Larchmont YC boat, Jason Carroll’s Mod 70 Argo leading the fleet going 26 knots with 117 miles to the finish. Argo covered 426 miles in the last 26 hours sustaining speeds in the ocean that many powerboats can’t.

Two things to note about Argo’s position: 1) they are a few hours behind the record-breaking pace they set in 2022, and 2) Zoulou, another Mod 70 is literally breathing down Argo’s neck. Zoulou is just a mile behind Argo as they rip north to round the second to last mark. All Zoulou need to pull into the lead is a slight slip-up or botched maneuver by Argo to take the lead. After all, at 26+ knots, they are covering a mile of ocean in just over two minutes.
