J 105 # 236 spent her first twenty years on a lake in Tennessee, sailed from a lift for
daysailing and short cruising. As a result, she was in much better condition, with
minimal grazing when compared with other J 105’s from the same era. After purchase
by her new owner in 2021, and renamed BRIGADOON, she has undergone an
extensive two year restoration, optimizing her for ORR and PHRF racing, while
maintaining an emphasis on easy sailing and yacht quality cosmetics. She was sailed
as a standard J 105 in 2021 and modifications began during the winter of 2021-22,
including:

• Design optimization by Greg Stewart of Nelson Marek Design
o Optimized keel and rudder templates
o Optimized sail plan including higher spinnaker halyard and permanent
sprit

• Modifications managed by Olander Yacht Services
o Remove standard extendable bowsprit
o Install carbon sprit with bobstay and dual tack lines
▪ Single part for spinnaker, double part for Code sails
o Fair topsides, bottom, keel and rudder
o Epoxy paint topsides, black with red & white accent stripes & gold leaf
cove stripe by Ichiban Yacht Painters
o Spray paint bottom with Black VC Offshore
▪ Faired to race bottom finish
o Sand deck and install C-Deck teak by Mac Design
o Compound all cockpit and cabin fiberglass
o Install teak wheel and replace steering gear in pedestal
o Strip mast, install spinnaker halyard above standard shieve
o Overhaul all standing rigging
o Replace roller furling headstay with rod headstay
o Epoxy paint mast and boom
o Install new Harken backstay adjuster and boom vang
o Replace all Jam Cleats and halyard leads

After a successful sailing season in 2022, during the winter of 2022-23 the boat was
stored indoors at East Passage Boatwrights where additional upgrades were
completed, including:

• Interior Upgrades
o Replace all floorboards in main cabin
o Clean and paint forepeak
o Construct box over through hull fittings for fathometer and speedometer
o Remove sink and install stainless steel icebox with drain using sink
through hull fitting
o Upgrade storage bins and install teak doors
o Strengthen companionway ladder attachment
o Add Teak Hatchboards
o New Sunbrella Cushions

• Additional Sail from North Sails Portsmouth
o Code 0 Xi 06 (The J-0 works for ORR, but is penalized 8 sec/mile under
PHRF so the Code 0 is used for PHRF racing)

Following these upgrades, BRIGADOON is now the “coolest J 105 on the planet”.
