Boats shall carry satellite telephones with continuous, uninterrupted signals and other required features (3.29.1(b))
Personal flotation is not required at the race start, except when the boat is reefed (see the next item) (5.01)
“Safety harnesses and life jackets shall be worn while on deck from sunset to sunrise and/or when the mainsail is reefed or being reefed” (5.02)
AIS transponders are not required but are recommended (3.29.1(n)

Winter is coming and this is a great time for a final visit to your boat to make sure she’s ready. Here are a few things to check:

- sky halyards with a messenger or secure away from spar
- secure checkstays or runners away from spar
- remove any electronics that are not permanently installed
- remove bilge drain plug if installed; otherwise plan to check your bilge after heavy rainstorms or snow melt!
- remove canvas and cushions and store in a dry location
- make sure deck is clear of leaves especially near scuppers

In Memoriam: Thomas “Tim” Mariner, 1950-2011

We are deeply saddened to report that Tim Mariner passed away on Saturday, April 2nd in Wellington, FL.

Tim was a CPYB broker with McMichael for 15 years and known throughout the Northeast as a highly knowledgeable and professional asset to the industry. He was an active member of Riverside Yacht Club. Tim retired in October to spend more time with his family in Florida. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Liz, his son Chris, daughter Tayler and sister Mary Connolly.

A memorial service will be held 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at St. David’s in the Pines Episcopal Church in Wellington, FL. An obituary can be seen here.

With a little help from UPS and the weather gods, we were able to take the Tartan 4000 out on her maiden sail today, one day ahead of schedule! Designer Tim Jackett and the excellent team from factory were on hand, as well as the McMichael crew and photographer Billy Black.

Here’s a great clip of the main dropping easily into the v-boom (no flaking neccessary!) and a nice still shot of the boat close reaching with the 150% genoa. Stay tuned for excellent professional photos and video from Billy Black!

20 Years of Alerion Sailing

Introducing the Tartan Design Blog

Tartan has launched the new Tartan Design Blog, aimed at providing up-to-the-minute information on two exciting new builds: the Tartan 4000 and Tartan 4700. The blog will come directly from the design & build teams at the factory, so it will provide a fascinating “insider’s view” of the production of these new models.

The 4700 is a custom build that originated when a McMichael client came to us looking for the perfect boat, and we have been deeply involved in the design process. We have also sold hull #1 of the new 4000 model – a boat that will recalibrate your expectations for performance, customization and volume in a production cruising yacht. Look for #1 at our yard in February.

Production Begins on Two New Tartan Models

McMichael has hit the ground running with Tartan Yachts, selling hull #1 of two new models in the Tartan line-up to our clients.

The new, 40-foot Tartan 4000 was very well received at the boat shows, and look for the first 5 boats to be on the water next spring. Hull #1 is being built for our customer and should arrive at our yard by March.

We have also undertaken a fully-custom project with Tartan for another client; the 4700 is a brand new design from Tim Jackett and the team, working closely with McMichael. Tooling is underway and you will see the boat in local waters next Spring. It will be hard to miss this beauty!
