J/70 North American’s “Sell Out” in 28 hours!

Anticipation was high for the first ever J/70 North American
Championship, but no one expected the overwhelming, rapid response to the
opening of registration this past Monday. In what may be a world-record for any one-design
fleet (dinghy, catamaran or keelboat), the regatta reached its 90-boat entry
threshold within 28 hours!! Hosted by the Annapolis Yacht
Club and J/70 Fleet 1, the J/70 North American Championship will take place
from September 26-28, 2013. The list of sailors participating is simply
astounding, with many World, North American and European champions from dozens
of classes participating.

Regatta registration opened on Monday, June 3 at 9:30 am ET, and J/70 sailors
from across North America flooded the event website until the 90-boat limit was
achieved around 12:30 pm ET on Tuesday, June 4. “In 35 years of sailing,
I’ve never seen anything close to this,” exclaimed J/70 Class President Joe
Colling of Ohio! “Watching the registration all day and seeing those numbers
keep climbing demonstrates the unbelievable enthusiasm for the J/70. It’s
already an epic event!”

There is plenty of local J/70 racing going on right here on Western Long Island Sound, including a Friday evening and Sunday afternoon series off of Mamaroneck with as many as 9 boats participating.

(Newport, RI)- From the J design/build team that launched the J/70 and J/111, comes the NEW J/88, a 29’ mid-size family speedster with stability, style and sailing comfort. J/88 hits the sweet-spot in J Boat’s performance sprit range – large enough to provide the creature comforts of a sit-in cockpit, inboard diesel, overnighting interior and head; and small enough to be single-point lifted, owner trailered and stored.

If sailing is having your cake and eating it too, then the J/88 will be like ordering the whole dessert menu. Design highlights include a high-aspect, non-overlapping sail plan (no genoas) with a carbon fiber, double-spreader mast – deck stepped for easy rigging, tuning and keeping the main cabin dry. The 6.5 ft fixed, low VCG keel with molded GRP finish is similar to the J/70’s, ensuring a fair, smooth foil for every boat. The result will be a ride that’s every bit as exciting as the J/88’s speedster siblings – fast and balanced upwind with planing performance downwind in moderate to fresh breezes.

On deck, the daysailing comforts include a spacious T-shaped cockpit (J/111 style) with seating and backrests forward of the floor-mounted traveler and a wide-open cockpit aft due to the tiller-steered, transom mounted high-aspect rudder. Adding to J/88’s ease-of-sailing characteristics is an in-deck jib furler, retractable carbon bowsprit and cockpit-led sail controls. Belowdecks, the J/88 sports a weekending layout with two full length settees, Igloo cooler, galley sink, private head forward of bulkhead and optional V-berth.

J/88 hull #1 is projected to launch in June 2013!

Big Breeze Brings the Fun

Day Three saw 18-22 kts of breeze with enough easterly component to create a 2-3 foot swell. Challenging conditions for a powered-up boat, but at the first weather mark kites were set and the fleet took off, most boats planing consistently with 12-15 kts of boat speed. What a blast! Light Breeze Expected for Monday

Team Bazinga! is ready for battle, along with 38 other J/70′s here at Key West. We made it here Friday, ramp-launched on Saturday, and tuned up Sunday with some other fleet members.

Today’s forecast calls for light breeze around 5 kts, so fingers are crossed that we’ll see a bit and can get in a few races. The rest of the week looks totally solid though, with 10-20 kts out of the the north and then east as the week progresses.

White Hot Racing for J/70s and PHRF Fleets!

J/Teams Set Sail For Key West White Hot Racing for J/70s and PHRF Fleets! (Key West, Florida)- There is a lot of world-class talent heading down to Key West Race Week and J/Teams are leading the way in J/70s along with a highly competitive PHRF fleet that includes J/109s, J/111s, J/120, J/122 and J/44 teams. The forecast for the practice weekend of January 18th to 20th looks a bit dim, with a large frontal system passing through with clouds, rain and winds clocking rapidly around into the north. Nevertheless, it’s a typical weather scenario for this time of year and the sailors are hoping the forecast next week for “postcard” conditions is accurate- sun, 15-20 kt winds from the easterly quadrants, puffy white clouds scudding across the horizon, gorgeous aquamarine waters and crystalline blue skies. Perhaps it may fulfill the expectations of Key West’s Chamber of Commerce “crystal ball”!

The J/70 class will make its Key West debut in dramatic fashion as it’s the regatta’s largest fleet with an impressive 39 boats. The J/70 has taken the sailing world by storm with over 300 boats sold in less than nine months– easily the fastest growing sportboat class in history. Many top-notch skippers who have competed in Key West in other designs will do so this year in the latest J design, including successful sailors like Tim Healy and Kerry Klingler. Klingler noted that most owners are still learning the J/70, particularly how to handle the oversized spinnaker, which will be critical to success next week.

“Key West has always been a tremendous showcase for any new design and we are looking forward to launching the J/70 to a wider audience with great competition at one of the world’s most renowned regattas,” commented Rod Johnstone, co-founder of J/Boats with his brother Bob. What will be interesting to watch is to see how some of the original J/24 sailors who participated in the first J/24 Midwinters in Key West (1978!) will perform against the current generation of top-notch one-design sailors.

Amongst the “old guard” participating will be the father/son team of Rod and Jeff Johnstone sailing RAGTIME USA 155. In addition, the first J/24 Midwinters winners back in 1978, Mark Ploch and Stu Johnstone, will be sailing on separate boats this time, Mark teamed up with Mike Bruno on SUGAR DADDY (Mike is renowned in the Northeast for sailing his gorgeous J/122 WINGS) and Stu is sailing with Tufts Jumbo All-American sailor Heather Gregg-Earl on ATLANTIC Weathergear/ MUSE from Boston. Other veterans include Dave Ullman (ULLMAN SAILS) sailing with friends from Ohio and Peter Duncan and Etchells 22 World Champion Jud Smith from Rye, NY and Marblehead, MA, respectively, racing RELATIVE OBSCURITY. Amongst this group are two J/Dealers, Don Finkle from RCR Yachts in Rochester, NY sailing JUNIOR and Don Trask from San Francisco/ North Carolina sailing SMOKIN’J (the founder of J/Boats West and long-time Laser Performance builder).

The northeastern contingent of 70 sailors is pretty formidable. The Boston/Newport/Long Island crowd includes J/80 and J/105 Key West Champion Brian Keane sailing another SAVASANA and J/24 World Champion Tim Healey sailing HELLY HANSEN. Fellow Bostonians include Henry Brauer and Will Welles on RASCAL; Dave Franzell on SPRING (founder of the Boston Sailing Center); and Mike Sudofsky on CARLOS. From down on the Sound, the formidable duo of Rick Lyall (J/109 NA Champion) and Kerry Klingler (J/80 NA/ World Champion) will be driving the appropriately named MENACE hard around the track.

The J/70 momentum has officially exceeded all expectations. In 1978, the J/24 class had their first Mid-winters at Key West, with 20 boats on the start line.

J/70 entries for Quantum Key West 2013 currently show 37 boats signed up. Nine of those competitors are coming from Long Island Sound, where it looks like the J/70 will have regular One Design starts next summer.

We have made it through the worst of the storm; no significant damage at the Post Road (sailboat) yard despite the tidal surge being several feet above the bulkhead. Stay tuned for an update from the Rushmore yard which was also badly flooded in the surge.

Monday, 11 am Update:

Our yard crews at Post Road and Rushmore have been working non-stop for the past few days to secure boats in advance of the storm and tidal surge. This is something we’ve been dealing with for 77 years so everyone knows what to do! We will try to post some updates here over the next 36 hrs.

The results are official and the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race was the fastest ever. A solid northeasterly breeze over the first 48+ hours made for a quick ride down the rhumbline, and the 10 year old course record fell by over 14 hrs to the 90′ Rambler.

C&C 101 Update and Photos

We just returned from the Tartan/C&C Spring Dealer Meeting where we got to spend a lot of time at the factory. They are currently running two shifts working through an order book that is filled through August, so it’s a busy place! Great to see the positive direction this company is taking under new ownership.

We were most excited to see the C&C 101, and the plug for the deck mold was just about complete. We expect to have hull #3 here at McMichael by June. For now these pictures will have to suffice!

Sailing World magazine has just announced their 2012 Boat of the Year winners, and the Tartan 4000 was named Best Performance Cruiser. This comes just days after sister publication Cruising World named the Tartan 4000 Best Mid-size Cruiser, 40-45 feet, in their independent competition. Judges noted the exceptional performance of the Tartan as a true stand-out in the class, and noted “the truly versatile design will shine during coastal cruising and offshore voyaging as well as competitive club or distance racing.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! Being chosen by both magazines is a true testament to the 4000′s excellent dual-purpose capabilities.

Boats shall carry satellite telephones with continuous, uninterrupted signals and other required features (3.29.1(b))
Personal flotation is not required at the race start, except when the boat is reefed (see the next item) (5.01)
“Safety harnesses and life jackets shall be worn while on deck from sunset to sunrise and/or when the mainsail is reefed or being reefed” (5.02)
AIS transponders are not required but are recommended (3.29.1(n)

Winter is coming and this is a great time for a final visit to your boat to make sure she’s ready. Here are a few things to check:

- sky halyards with a messenger or secure away from spar
- secure checkstays or runners away from spar
- remove any electronics that are not permanently installed
- remove bilge drain plug if installed; otherwise plan to check your bilge after heavy rainstorms or snow melt!
- remove canvas and cushions and store in a dry location
- make sure deck is clear of leaves especially near scuppers

J/111′s Dominate IRC at Cowes Week

The J/111 proved her mettle in IRC last week, taking podium finishes at Cowes Week in the UK.

The 32-boat IRC 2 class had seven days of racing in the big tides and breeze of the Solent, and the lightweight 111 was able to hold her own against some formidable contenders including the J/122, Elan 410 and Grand Soleil 40. Top five finishers were as follows:

In Memoriam: Thomas “Tim” Mariner, 1950-2011

We are deeply saddened to report that Tim Mariner passed away on Saturday, April 2nd in Wellington, FL.

Tim was a CPYB broker with McMichael for 15 years and known throughout the Northeast as a highly knowledgeable and professional asset to the industry. He was an active member of Riverside Yacht Club. Tim retired in October to spend more time with his family in Florida. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Liz, his son Chris, daughter Tayler and sister Mary Connolly.

A memorial service will be held 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at St. David’s in the Pines Episcopal Church in Wellington, FL. An obituary can be seen here.

With a little help from UPS and the weather gods, we were able to take the Tartan 4000 out on her maiden sail today, one day ahead of schedule! Designer Tim Jackett and the excellent team from factory were on hand, as well as the McMichael crew and photographer Billy Black.

Here’s a great clip of the main dropping easily into the v-boom (no flaking neccessary!) and a nice still shot of the boat close reaching with the 150% genoa. Stay tuned for excellent professional photos and video from Billy Black!

20 Years of Alerion Sailing
