Howard is the second generation to oversee the McMichael family boat business founded in 1935 by his parents Howard and Jackie. In 1963, after two years as an officer at Fort Dix training troops, he married and joined the family business.
He is a lifetime sailor, having raced with his parents on their 210 and then IOD, both named KANGAROO, winning national championships. In the late 1960’s he took to offshore racing, sailing several SORC, Bermuda, Halifax, Vineyard, and other blue water races. In 1971 he was part of the AMB Syndicate that won the Best Overall Performance “Everett Morris Trophy” at STC Block Island Race Week, racing Ranger 33 PUFF with a clean sweep of wins in their division.
He is a former Commodore of Larchmont Yacht Club (1999-2000) and a member of the Storm Trysail Club since 1970. “Giving back to the sport of sailing” through race management and the STC’s safety seminars and intercollegiate events keeps him on the water in his Fortier 26 PUFF. Marine photography has been an ongoing hobby and you may see many photos (possibly of your boat racing) that have been taken from PUFF. You will often find Howard aboard his son-in-law H.L. DeVore’s J/44, HONAHLEE, cruising with several of his 7 grandchildren.
Howard is the senior member of the Coastal Zone Commission, representing the Town of Mamaroneck since the late 1980s when he helped write the original Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan (LWRP) that helps protect and improve the waters of Western Long Island Sound.
“The key to long-term success in the boat sales and service business is creating a team of talented and dedicated employees,” which he is very proud of.
Howard’s email address is email@example.com.
